This course covers the key elements of consumer law from retailer, customer care and consumer perspective. Participants do not need any legal knowledge and the emphasis is on practical problem-solving.

Aim: Understanding of consumer law from retailer, customer care and consumer perspectives.

On completion participants will be able to:
• Give a legal definition of a consumer
• Explain key rights and obligations conferred by Irish legislation and Case Law
o Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980
o Consumer Information Act 1978
o Consumer Protection Act 2007
• Outline key consumer-related EC Directives and Regulations
(eg: Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulation (1995) based on Directive 93/13/EEC re distance selling, e-commerce)
o Sale of Goods and Associated Guarantees Directive 1999/44/EC
• Outline National Consumer Agency Guidelines
• Outline rights re different situations (eg: sales, seconds, guarantees, deposits, shop notices, gift vouchers, private sales etc)
• Identify common misconceptions and pitfalls
• Suggest method for dealing with unhelpful retailers/consumers.
• Synopsise the Small Claims Court procedure
• Advise on practical trouble-shooting tips
• Refer to relevant advisory, information and support agencies

Coming Up

A Public Information Presentation entitled ‘Making a Will won’t kill you’ is to take place in Beara, County Cork at Eyeries National School at 7.30pm on Tuesday 23 February 2016. Hosted by Eyeries NS Parents’ Association and delivered by Anne O’Carroll of Cascade Training Consultancy, this jargon-free presentation gives practical tips on how to make a will, what happens if you don’t and how best to provide for your loved ones, avail of tax breaks and ensure peace of mind. This event is a fund-raiser for the school and is open to all, but parents of young children or other dependents are particularly encouraged to attend. There will be a Question & Answer session afterwards and handouts will be provided.
